Be it by yourself in competition with others or together with your loved ones, nothing stands in the way of great toboggan rides in Marebbe and Val Badia. Tobogganing is a great winter pastime – not just for children but for adults too! After all, adults are only big kids at heart: Especially under the summits of the Ladin Dolomites!

In the unspoilt Val Badia, this sporting tradition has remained alive. The children build their own courses and ramps, over which they jump hundreds of times with their sleds. At the end of the day, when it’s dark outside, they come home with their clothes soaked through and their gloves filled with snow. Hidden picture puzzle books often take tobogganing children as their theme. Everyone wears a woolly hat without fail, and a broad grin between cheeks turned red by the cold air is ever present too.

Horse-drawn sleigh rides

Little bells ring softly, a blanket covers your body and your loved ones are very close to you, lying in your arms. You hear the leisurely clop of the horses’ hooves and the steady pull of the reins and you see the lights of the rustic farms on the hillsides above the valley and the stars twinkling in the sky. This is exactly what a ride on a horse-drawn sleigh in Val Badia feels like. Once transport for queens and princes, today a sleigh ride is an almost forgotten delight. Immerse yourself in the world of 200 years ago and enjoy the gentle silence of this wintry, Christmassy world of wonder.

History

The winters in days gone by were icy cold and very snowy. Every farmer had an alp where the grass was cut in summer. After drying, it was stored in barns on the mountainside. When the hay became scarce in the valley in winter, the farmers had to go all the way up to the meadows under the peaks of the Dolomites to bring more for their animals. No matter how cold it was or how much snow there was, they used sledges on which they tied the hay in long packages.

People have been using sledges for many thousands of years. The oldest sledge found in Europe dates back to the 7th century AD and belonged to a Viking king. Since wood does not last forever, we can say with a degree of certainty that the history of sledding goes back much further.
