Culture, history, traditions. There is plenty of all of these in Val Badia, since caring for them is close to the Ladins’ hearts. This is especially so in La Pli/Marebbe, where some farmers still mow the grass on the mountainsides using old methods – by hand, without the help of machines. The farming families take great care of the landscape here, a practice that is unique even in Val Badia. Likewise, the area’s processions, parades, festivals and markets are also unique: as a guest at the Somür, you will gain an insight into the customs of the valley of Marebbe and Val Badia. Every three years in spring, around 1,000 men from throughout Val Badia set out on foot on a three-day pilgrimage to the Sabiona monastery near Chiusa in the Isarco Valley.
If it rains, the hay bath, the cheese dairies of San Vigilo, Lü de Corcela and Lü de Pincila, the Lü da Cianorè schnapps distillery, Brunico with its lovely alleyways, and the many museums in Val Pusteria are all waiting to welcome visitors. The library in San Martino is home to the "Istitut Ladin Micura de Rü", a research centre for the Ladin language and culture. There is also a Ladin newspaper, "La Usc di Ladins".
