Culture, history, traditions. There is plenty of all of these in Val Badia, since caring for them is close to the Ladins’ hearts. This is especially so in La Pli/Marebbe, where some farmers still mow the grass on the mountainsides using old methods – by hand, without the help of machines. The farming families take great care of the landscape here, a practice that is unique even in Val Badia. Likewise, the area’s processions, parades, festivals and markets are also unique: as a guest at the Somür, you will gain an insight into the customs of the valley of Marebbe and Val Badia. Every three years in spring, around 1,000 men from throughout Val Badia set out on foot on a three-day pilgrimage to the Sabiona monastery near Chiusa in the Isarco Valley.

If it rains, the hay bath, the cheese dairies of San Vigilo, Lü de Corcela and Lü de Pincila, the Lü da Cianorè schnapps distillery, Brunico with its lovely alleyways, and the many museums in Val Pusteria are all waiting to welcome visitors. The library in San Martino is home to the "Istitut Ladin Micura de Rü", a research centre for the Ladin language and culture. There is also a Ladin newspaper, "La Usc di Ladins".

There are two museums in Val Badia. They are a treasure trove of the history of the area over the last millennium. The Ciastel de Tor museum in San Martin, which is housed in the castle of the same name, also has a restaurant and has many impressive exhibits telling the fascinating story of the history of the valley and Ladin people. Travel back through time in this magnificent castle and gather knowledge of the past before returning to the present. The Ursus Ladinicus in San Cassiano looks at the adventurous life of the Stone Age cave bears that lived in the Conturines caves in the Dolomites a long time ago. This interactive museum teaches you about this animal and the geology and formation of the Dolomites. If you are an expert on fossils, you will be especially impressed by some of the exhibits.

MMM Corones & Lumen

Plan de Corones is great for hiking, but that is not all. The panoramic views from the summit will leave you speechless, if only for a few seconds, but there is more here to broaden your horizons too. The mountain is also home to impressive exhibitions in two museums plus the "Concordia" peace bell. Lumen, at 1,800 m, deals with mountain photography and its history and contains many magnificent works of art by well-known photographers. Due to their size, the photographs feel like windows offering a real glimpse of the outside world and casting a spell on visitors. The second museum, MMM Corones, is one of the Messner Mountain Museums and uses photographs and artefacts to tell stories of the lives of mountain pioneers and alpinists. The building, which is situated at 2,275 m above sea level, was designed by the famous star architect, Zaha Hadid – and is a spectacular sight both inside and out.

MMM Ripa

Another museum in the MMM group is also very close by – the Ripa in Brunico Castle. The name Ripa is Tibetan and means "mountain man", the very theme that MMM Ripa deals with. The collection of objects helps visitors explore the different ways of life of mountain peoples around the globe and illuminates cultural and historical aspects in the various regions as well as the topics of religion and tourism.

Brunico, the fifth largest town in South Tyrol is half an hour away by car from Ciasa Somür. It is a real gem and the main town in the heart of Val Pusteria. Brunico has many historic town houses from the late Middle Ages lining its narrow streets. Many of them have oriels as well as window grilles made from wrought iron and are decorated in lovely pastel shades or have natural stone walls. Under the covered arcades, which are very typical of South Tyrolean towns, there are many lovely little shops selling Italian fashions and high-quality goods from traditional local producers. A great place to find souvenirs!

There is also a municipal museum in Brunico, a doll museum in the village of Falzes not far away, and a museum of fire brigade helmets in Gais. The latter has a collection of more than 700 fire helmets from all over the world. Immerse yourself in the history of how South Tyrol was settled at Mansio Sebatum in St. Lorenzen. Covering three floors, the museum takes you on a journey back in time to the first century AD. Learn more about ancient traditions and past ways of life as well as the historic social class system in the Alps at the South Tyrolean Folklore Museum with its open-air exhibition next to a Baroque castle in Teodone.

If you would like to know about even more museums and collections, we will be happy to tell you about other educational destinations when you arrive at Ciasa Somür!
