Deep serenity on one side, fun and pure action on the other. There are few places where it is possible to combine these two contrasts as well as you can at the Somür. One day you hike along the snowed-in lonely meadows under the Dolomites with touring skis and snowshoes, the next you experience skiing fun on the slopes and après ski without end! From San Vigilio, the main village in the commune of Marebbe, there is a cable car that travels straight to the top of Plan de Corones, the gateway to enjoyment. It is also not far to another great skiing area in the Dolomites, the Sellaronda.

THE WORLD CUP AT PLAN DE CORONES

On 24 January you can follow the women’s giant slalom race on the famous Erta slope in San Vigilio from close quarters. The Erta is a demanding and steep slope that demands technical perfection! Be part of this thoroughly exciting event from your base at the Somür in winter 2023!

The mountain takes its name, which means “coronation place”, from a legend. The story goes that Dolasilla, the fairy queen of the Ganes, was crowned on its summit. Today, with over 120 km of slopes in all different levels of difficulty, 32 lifts and cable cars, a 7-km-long downhill ski run and a wide range of slopes suitable for beginners to professionals, Plan de Corones is an attractive destination for all. The state-of-the-art ski resort is part of the exclusive Dolomiti Superski and boasts wonderful panoramic views in all directions. It is home to one of the biggest ski schools in South Tyrol, a snow park with plenty to keep freestylers happy, and of course, warm chalets where you can satisfy your hunger pangs and, if you want, enjoy some après-ski. Another highlight of Plan de Corones is the option of combining skiing with a cultural visit: as well as the Peace Bell with its mountain relief around the bottom, there are two attractive museums to visit.

The Sella Ronda

Whilst it is connected to the Plan de Corones by a black run, you can also reach this ski circuit by a bus that departs every 20 minutes. The Sella Ronda consists of a 300 kilometre circuit that encircles the entire mountain massif. One of the best-known day skiing tours is the ”Mountain hunter tour”. This route takes you past mountains such as Col di Lana, where the trenches that were dug into the mountain during the First World War, can still be clearly seen. They are lasting silent witnesses to a darker past.

There is a ski rental shop directly in the village that offers many convenient services. We also have a ski store at Ciasa Somür!

History

The oldest skis are 5,000 years old and they were actual wooden boards, from which their German name, "Bretter", is derived. It was not so long ago that people in South Tyrol used to slide down the snowy hills on wooden skis. They often broke on wild jumps. Older locals remember experiencing this themselves and often tell us about what happened to them with a laugh. The core of today’s skis is still made of wood because it is such a flexible material. The technology around it makes us faster and faster, and also makes skiing safer.
